Assessment of Some Heavy Metal Concentration in the Water of Maiganga Coal Mining Area, Gombe-Nigeria

The concentration of heavy metal (Pb, Zn, and Cd) were studied around coal mine in Maiganga, Gombe-Nigeria. The aim of the study was the assessment of the level of heavy metals in the water samples of the borehole, hand dug well and the mine drain water around the coal mine area. Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS) was used to read the heavy metals concentration in the water samples. The result indicated the concentration of Pb, Zn, and Cd in the water samples. While according to accumulation factor the water samples from all the sampling sources were polluted by the heavy metals under study. However, the values were all below values recommended by NESREA for water. If the concentration of toxic metals in the water continue to increase it could pose a health threat to the local population who use the water for drinking and other domestic purposes. This research further recommend the continues monitoring of heavy metals concentration in the water of Maiganga by regular assessment of heavy metals concentration in the water at the area and also urge the company to devise other means of managing it mine drain to prevent it from polluting the communities sources of water.
