Sustainable urbanization is a critical challenge facing Lagos; the city is the Africa’s most populous city with a population of nearly 20 million people. It is the most prosperous city in Nigeria, where much of the nation’s wealth and economic activity are concentrated. Although Lagos’ standard of living is the highest in Nigeria, Lagos is yet to meet any of the targets set in the United Nation’s Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). This paper examines the challenges of sustainable urbanization in Lagos, which include: degradation of the physical environment; disaster management; weakness of the existing institutional architecture; population growth and dynamics, infrastructure, waste management; incidence of crimes and suggested Good Practice approach as a strategy for achieving sustainable urbanization.
