Abstract:
Man everywhere and every time is pre-occupied with the problems of development. This is because the purpose and focus of development is about his well-being. Man is a being of many aspects- economic, educational, political, social, health, housing, linguistic, legal, moral, communicative, etc, and every time he is desirous of positive changes occurring in them. Positive or desirable changes occurring in them combine to harness, enhance, promote, advance and preserve his well-being and by extension flower in happiness the ultimate goal of man in the world. As important as development is in the life of man, it is sad to observe that African states as a whole have been behaving like fish out of water in matters of development since a long time. The purpose of this paper is to identify the causes, examine theories of development and recommend the one that can rescue African states from their present development predicaments. The methods adopted in order to give the topic a deserved treatment are analysis, criticism and prescription.
